What is The Correct Dartboard Height?

Premier Darts |

Whether you're a beginner or a seasoned pro, setting up your dartboard correctly is crucial for a fair and consistent game. One of the most important aspects is getting the dartboard height right.

What is the Correct Dartboard Height?

The standard height for a dartboard is 5 feet 8 inches (1.73m) from the floor to the centre of the bullseye. Always measure from the ground to the bullseye, not the top of the board. This standard is widely accepted, though some organisations may have slightly different requirements.

Why Dartboard Height Matters

Setting the dartboard at the correct height ensures:

  • Fair play: A board that’s too high or too low can create an advantage for one player.
  • Player safety: Incorrect height may cause players to bend or stretch awkwardly, risking back, shoulder or arm strain.
  • Consistency: Standardised height means players can enjoy the same conditions at home, pubs or competitions.

How Far Should the Dartboard Be from the Oche?

Alongside correct height, distance is key. The standard throwing distance is 7 feet 9¼ inches (2.37m) from the face of the dartboard to the oche (throwing line). As with height, this may vary slightly depending on competition rules.

Setting Up Your Dartboard Environment

Correct dartboard height is only part of the setup. For the best playing experience, also consider:

  • Secure mounting: Fix the dartboard firmly to a solid surface with screws or brackets to avoid wobbling.
  • Adequate lighting: Ensure the board is well lit so players can clearly see targets and darts.
  • Clear throwing line: Mark the oche with tape, chalk or a darts mat to establish a fair line for all throws.
  • Dartboard surrounds: Use a surround to protect walls, reduce noise and safeguard your darts from damage.

By setting your dartboard to the correct height and following these tips, you’ll create a safe, fair and enjoyable environment for players of every level.
